Faith sharing groups have long been a part of Christian worship. These small groups meet, often in the homes of members to read scripture, reflect on its meaning and share their experiences of how God has worked in and through them in their life.
Motherwell Diocese promoted such small faith sharing groups in the 1980’s as ‘Renew’. At that time parishioners went from house to house inviting people to join these small groups. This resulted in multiple groups in what was then, St Bridget’s and St Francis’ Parishes.
I joined one such group led by Irene Manley in her home in Bowes Crescent, in 1998 and can honestly say that those Faith Sharing meetings and the beautiful Christian community who attended them were the beginning and sustenance of my faith journey as an adult Christian. It has helped me explore and understand scriptures, but I have gained most by listening to the faith shared by other members. One original member of that group is still a faithful attender of meetings and her wisdom is invaluable.
Through the years this small group grew and contacted as we gained some members and lost others, but we all looked forwarded and embraced those meeting held during Lent and Advent as we prepared for the great annual festivals of the church. Out with these times we helped and encouraged one another with our prayers, through difficult times and knew we could count on the support of our ‘faith sharing family’.
We currently have two Faith Sharing groups within St Ambrose Parish. One which meets in the Chapel house at St Bridget’s, daytime and another which meets in St Francis’ meeting room in evening, both occur during Lent and Advent. The meetings are made up of scripture reading(s), reflections on these reading(s), sharing of experiences which may relate to the scripture read, prayer for our intentions and some time to chat and have a cuppa.
